McCain attacks on the Economy

On the heels of a latest poll that has John McCain with a 5 point lead in national polling over Obama, there has been a genuine sense of panic among Obama supporters. Hidden in stories about the new poll though is information that is, in my mind, the most troubling.

"McCain now has a 9-point edge, 49 percent to 40 percent, over Obama on the critical question of who would be the best manager of the economy -- an issue nearly half of voters said was their top concern in the November 4 presidential election."

After about a month of intense negative campaigning from John McCain, voters are seeming to be swayed to believe that the man in the following clips (save the one that is about him rather than includes him) is a better choice to be a steward of our struggling economy.

So how is it that voters trust this guys on the economy? Well it's because most of them haven't seen those clips. What they have seen is attack ads threatening that Barack Obama is going to raise their taxes. (Which is an ABSOLUTE lie I will get into soon.) Barack should be crushing John McCain on the issue of the economy, but he won't unless he goes on the offense. I love that Obama has built a hopeful campaign, and I love being part of the hope that we can get at least a little above the partisan vitriol to have honest debate about policy. But I would never allow that to cost us such an important election. I hope Obama wakes up soon and comes to the same realization.

Honestly, I think Obama's general election campaign basically started with the Biden announcement, and I think the attacks you saw by Biden on Saturday were just a preview of things to come.

I trust Obama to know when and how to go on the offensive. He and his advisers have run his campaign absolutely brilliantly... almost as if they're clairvoyant or something. It's creepy. Barack took 10 days of vacation, I think he understands the timing of campaigns perfectly, and he knows a few days off now and a hit in the polls won't make a difference come November 5th, especially if it means he's rested and ready to go balls-out for a couple of months.

Lately McCain's strategy has been to throw everything against the wall and see what sticks. Nothing has been really sticking that much, polling is trending down a bit for Obama but nothing particularly significant given his 10-day absence. McCain's campaign doesn't appear to have a coherent plan, but I'm sure Obama does. Just wait for Obama to execute his plan for the last couple of months :)

Kev, I believe too that the campaign will eventually do what's needed to win. But in 2004 we all kept saying "Well he's so close and he hasn't had to go on the attack, he will when the time is right." Well Kerry never did, and I'm fearful to my core of the democrats making that mistake again.
